There’s nothing quite like fall in Minnesota — the crisp air, the golden leaves, and the cozy layers that make this season so photogenic. Thats probably why it's such a favorite (mine too). Here’s how to get your family ready for a beautiful, stress-free fall photoshoot you’ll love looking back:

1. The Perfect Location

Minnesota is full of incredible fall backdrops — from tree-lined trails and cozy parks to golden fields that catch the evening sun just right. I spend time scouting new locations and visiting old favorites - aimed to give you the variety year after year. If you sign up for my email list, I'll make sure you get first dibs:

Wooded paths are great for those deep fall tones.

Open meadows or lakeshores for golden light and wide-open shots.

Downtown areas or farms if you love a little texture and character.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in matching jeans and white shirts (...thank goodness!). Instead, aim for colors that complement each other and the season. Think warm, earthy tones — creams, olive greens, navy, rust, tan, and mustard always look amazing against the Minnesota fall backdrop. Mix in cozy textures like knits, flannel, corduroy, or denim.

3. Dress in Layers

Fall weather here can be unpredictable — sunny one minute, breezy the next. Layers not only look great but keep everyone comfortable throughout the session. Bring along cardigans, vests, or light jackets. Layers also add great variety if we want to change up the look mid-session without a full outfit swap.

4. Bring a Few Simple Props (Optional!)

Props aren’t required, but they can add a touch of warmth and personality to your photos. I will provide some simple items that will create that cozy feel - but I'm all for collaboration! Got a newlywed mug set? An old favorite blanket? I do recommend keeping it simple — your family and your connection are the real focus.

5. Prepare the Kids (and the Adults!)

The best family photos happen when everyone feels relaxed and comfortable. Let your kids know we’re going to play and have fun — not pose perfectly. LIFE HACK Bring small snacks or treats as little motivators. And most importantly... don’t stress about keeping everyone perfectly still or smiling — some of the most beautiful moments are the candid ones between poses.

6. Relax and Trust the Process

You’ve done all the prep — now it’s time to enjoy it! My job is to guide you through gentle prompts, capture natural moments, and make sure you look and feel your best.Remember: it’s not about perfection — it’s about connection. The laughter, the little hugs, and the in-between moments are what truly make your photos shine.

Let’s Make It a Tradition!!!

Fall family photos aren’t just pictures — they’re a snapshot of who your family is right now. Watching families grow year after year is one of my favorite parts of being a photographer here in Minnesota. So, grab your sweaters, pile in the car, and let’s capture your family’s story against the most beautiful backdrop of the year.

I can't wait!
